Here in the United States, most kitchen sinks are equipped with garbage disposals to get rid of food waste without simply tossing it in the garbage can. While these devices provide a convenient way of disposing of food scraps, they will break down from time to time and need to be repaired. In this article, our team at Monster Plumbing will go over three signs that you need garbage disposal repair–if you notice any of these things happening in your kitchen, we encourage you to give us a call.
- It Starts Taking Longer to Break Down Food- Garbage disposals are designed to break down food scraps fast, and one that’s working properly shouldn’t take longer than a minute or two to chew through a sink’s worth of waste. If it starts to take longer for your disposal to process food waste, then we recommend that you have it inspected and repaired if necessary.
- It Develops a Bad Smell- Another sign that you need garbage disposal repair is the disposal developing a persistent bad smell. While it is normal to catch a whiff of an odor immediately after running the disposal (since it is grinding up food scraps, which tend to produce an unpleasant aroma), the smell shouldn’t linger for long, and if it does, then there’s probably something wrong
- It Needs to Be Reset Constantly- Although every garbage disposal will need to be reset occasionally, if you find yourself constantly reaching for the reset button, then you probably need garbage disposal repair. This is often a sign that the wiring is faulty, or that the disposal is nearing the end of its life.
